Response to interim report

I think my interim grade ( C ) was both fair and accurate. I think i am working on about a C at the moment, however i think my grade will probably improve by the next raising achievement day, as this is the first half term of A2 media studies.

In order for me to push my grade up from a C i need to:

. Concentrate more during lessons
. Further improve my essay writing skills
. Contribute more during lessons and make more of an effort

Further research internet and book

This Website briefly summarises womens football and talks of where and when it started. Much of the information can be used in my independent study whilst discussing SHEP

This website provides a detailed description of Laura Mulvey's male "Gaze" theory, a key theory and theorist that i will make references to in my independent study.

This is the website of the guardian, which includes a story stating that Gabby Logan is the best sports trivia presenter , that has been around for a long time. Gabby Logan is a key example of acceptance of females in the sports media, who i can mention in my indepdent study.

This is the website of Soccer A.M. a key programme that i will be making references to in my study.

This website provides a detailed explanation of gender representation within the media, and includes many links to other websites that are useful to make references to in my independent study.

This website provides a historical look at women and gender differeneces.

This website is from the guardian and goes into detail about female stereoetypes, within the media.

O'Sullivan, Tim, Dutton,Brian, Rayner, Phillip(2003) : Studying the media. London, UK- From this book i have taken down key chapters that i will need to look back on, in order to include in my independent study. In particular chapter four representation and realism is a key chapter that includes a lot about female representation, stereotypes, gender differences e.t.c., within society. It provides a great amount of information, on all the aspects of SHEP that i will need to make key references to in my independent study. In addition the book also presents many key issues and debates, within the chapter that i will be looking to make references to within my independent study.

Book Research

1) Spender, Dale (1983): Feminist Theorists. Great Sutton Street, London: The womens Press LTD.- This book particularly focuses on providing viewpoints from many of the Key theorists around in the 1980's and even up to three hundred years prior to that. This will greatly fit in to the Social and Historical aspect of my study and furthermore will provide the viewpoint from a key group associated with the progression of female sports, the Feminists.

2) Curran, James & Gurevitch, Michael (2000):Mass Media and Society, Third edition. Euston Road, London: Hodder Headline group.- This book focuses on providing an over view on many key aspects relevant to my study, particuarly goes in to great detail on every element of SHEP that i can mention in my study. Section 3 (The mediation of Meaning) in particular focuses on representation and has a great amount of detail on the representation of women.

3) Kingston, Anne (2004): The meaning of wife: Toronto, Canada: HarperCollins Publishers LTD.- This book would heavily be focusing on the political aspect of SHEP, as it provides an explanation into the traditional conservative viewpoint of the family orientated wife. The book explains what is associated with being a wife and what is expected of a wife intodays society. It looks at many iconic figures within the media who defeat the stereotype of women being housewives e.t.c. and looks at many debates associated with the women and marriage. Hence this would be a very useful book to mention in my study as it is very relevant to the representation of women.

4) Sardar, Ziauddin & Loon, van,Borin (2000): Introducing Media Studies: Duxford, Cambridge: Icon Books LTD- The book particularly looks at and explores the relationship between the Media, ideology, knowledge and power. Much of the book looks at ideologies present within the media and gender represetnation within the media, and hence due to this would be useful to include in my independent study.

5)Holmes, Kelly & Richard Lewis (2004): Kelly Holmes, My Olimpic Ten days: Thames Wharf Studios, London: Virgin books LTD- As Kelly Holmes is one of the biggest female sports icons in this world , her words of her victory in the olympics would come in useful in my study, whilst discussing influential female sports figures. In particular she could also be mentioned in the political aspect in my study, as she is taking part in the board for the olympics alongside Sebastian Coe, hence is a great example of why an increase in female representation in sports is existant nowadays.

6)Branston, Gill & Stafford, Roy (2003): The Media Student's Book:Abindgdon, Oxon: Routledge- This book focuses on many key aspects of Ideologies, Representation, SHEP, Audience theories, theorists and key media debates that are of high relevenace to my debate. The book also focuses on and goes into detail about many case studies that i can mention and are useful for my independent study.

7)Arno, Madeleine (1985): Race & Gender:Headington Hill, Oxford: Pergamon Press Ltd- This book goes into great detail about many issues regarding gender particularly within society and also education. It would be of great use in my study to focus on the social and Historical aspect of SHEP, particularly as it provides information regarding the situation in the 1980's and prior to that.

8)Rayner, Phillip & Wall, Peter & Kruger, Stephen(2001): Media Studies: The Essential Introduction: New Fetter Lane, London: Routledge- This book particularly shows an indepth explanation and study into gender and representation, aswell as presents key debates and case studies, that would be off high relevance to my Independent study. It also goes into great detail regarding ideologies and links to modern day media texts that i could include and refer to in my study.

9)Stam, Robert(2000): Film theory: Britain: Blackwell Publishers- This book goes into great detail in exploring how females are representated within film. This would be useful in my study as often films reflect and pay an influential role in what is occuring within society. It also shows different audiences viewpoints on women E.G. a male dominated film showing women in a weak role, is likely to have an audience who believe in patriarchy.

10)Hong,Fan and Mangan,J.A.(2003)Soccer, Women and Sexual liberation: USA: Routledge-This book exemplifies the progression of womens football over the years and is the first in depth study of womens football in particular. All aspects of this book covered will be extremely useful for my study and this is a vital book for me to research into, to find out more about womens football worldwide aswell as in the U.K.

Blog Buddy

My blog buddy from another class is Jaspreet. Jaspreets study is -" Has the Hollywood Film industry subverted from the stereotypical sexual representation of women, with particular reference to “American Pie: Band Camp” by Steve Rash (2005)?". Jaspreet particuarly focuses on the sopranos on his blog.

Jaspreet's and my independent study are both very similar as we both are researching and writing about female reperesentation within the media. Therefore we are likely to talk about similar issues, theories and look at similar ideologies. We both hence are likely to look at similar research and can discuss our findings with eachother.

Jaspreets blog includes a lot of useful information on social views regarding female representation in the media as well as female perception in general. Also some of the delicious links that jaspreet has mentioned on his blog are of use to me to include in my independent study.

My blog buddy in my class is Karandeep. Karandeeps study is "To what extent have females roles changed?". Karandeep is particularly focusing on Kill Bill and is making references to Catwoman.

Karandeeps study is very similar to mine as we both are studying female representation within the media. Karandeep is hence likely to study female representation in the past in detail as well as female representation now within the media. This will be useful to include in my study as it will show the development females have made in the media but moreover the development they have made within societies. We are both likely to look at similar theorists, ideologies and study the same things that fit into the "SHEP" aspect of our studies.

In particular karandeeps keywords will be of use for me to look at in my study. Also the links that karandeep has researched are of use to look at to include in my study.

Soccer Am interviewing FHM Magazine Girls- Textual Analysis

The video is taken from football chat show called Soccer A.M., which discusses football news and events, but primarily aims to entertain due to its heavy emphasis on comedy.

The costumes in the extract, in particular make the women being interviewed appear glamourised and arguably in a dominant role. However the institution that they are representing, F.H.M is highly emphasised on and made apparent, particularly in the background. This connotes that these women are not in fact in a superior role, however are all women that have posed for F.H.M., which is a magazine often making women appear as sex objects and their purpose is to provide male pleasure. This further links to the institution of the programme which is SkySports, it suggests that Skysports is a highly male dominated channel, and this is the case as the majority of people that watch the channels are men.

Furthermore to this the confused and shocked faces the women make whilst being asked questions about football, makes them appear unintelligent and for many makes them adhere to the "dumb blonde" stereotype. This links to a patriarchal ideology clearly being apparent, as the man who is interviewing the women is mocking their intelligence, in order to purposely make it appear that women have no knowledge regarding sports and creates the impression that in this programme, that womens main purpose is to provide visual pleasure for men.

Moreover, a high angled shot is being taken looking down on the women being interviewed. This is in order to emphasis on their inferiority over the man that is interviewing them. Arguably some would say that this links to female representation within media. As despite the women being filmed in the interview appearing to be the centre of the attention, the male interviewing the celebrities posing for FHM, is in a much more dominant role. This suggests that in Soccer A.M, women are always represented in a much more inferior manner to men.

In addition, towards the end of the clip, there is a non- diagetic sound of a large group of men laughing at Keely Heeley the last woman to be interviewed about football. However Keely Heeley reinforces the stereotype that women do not know anything about football, by saying that she should not be expected to known about the sport as she is a "girl". The genre of the text is Sports , however a sub genre would be comedy. The way that women are portrayed within soccer a.m, creates the impression that football in general is highly male dominated and that it is a topic that women do not know about, or are not expected to know about.

Furthermore the cinematography used such as close ups and zooms into the bodies of the women being interviewed, reinforces the view that in Soccer A.M., womens main purpose is to provide males with visual pleasure. This hence links to audience, and clearly indicates that the target audience for this programme ,is males aged between 16-40, as the humour used within the show would appeal to men that are within this age gap.

10-Links from del.icio.us

1.This is a link of a timeline showing how womens sports progressed particularly focusing on the olympics. This will be of key importance as it focuses on the Historical aspect of SHEP.

2.This is a link showing the best looking women who plays sports. This would be of key importance as i could link this to show a patriarchal ideology, as despite these women playing sports they are looked at in a sexual manner , not for their sporting talents.

3. This is a link for the womens sports foundation. This is of key importance and could be included in my study as it is an organisation aiming to improve oppurtunites for women and girls in sports in the UK.

4.This is a link showing how women have started to take a greater interest in watching sports. This is of significance and could be mentioned in my essay as the more women that gradually begin to watch sports, the more of a interest will be taken in womens football, therefore possibly resulting in even more women playing it.

5.This is the website of the T.V. channel Eurosport. This is of key significance as most womens sports events aired on this channel. This could be mentioned in my essay as eurosport is a highly well known institution, and is providing a lot of coverage for womens sports.

6.This is a link showing christian's views on sports. It shows that despite in the past women playing sports were frowned, upon christians today encourage their girls to play sports. This again would be linked to SHEP in my essay as it shows the changing social views towards women playing sports.

7.This site is a website urging women to play sports and push themselves to do well, and also provides them with information on how to progress. This could be linked to ideology and included in my essay as it has a very strong feminist ideology to it.

8.This is a video of the egyptian womens footballers. This is of great significance as despite countries where the Islamic religion is dominant and their beliefs, women are able to play football and enact their sporting talents. This could be linked to SHEP and included in the social aspect of my essay.

9. This website is specifically designed to give womens opinions on sports. This could be included in my essay as it shows that sports is not as unpopular amongst women as many may argue.

10.Link showing the freedom of women in sports which exemplifies the removing of the ban "on women in the soccer stadiums that came in with the 1979 Islamic revolution".This again links to SHEP as it shows islams and asians changing attitudes to allow women to play sports.

10 Key Definitions Significant for My study

1. Advertising- Means of encouraging an audience to consume or view a media text. This is a highly significant aspect of promoting womens football as it enables the audience to be persuaded into watching a womens football game. Without advertising there would be a lack of awareness by the audiences that may view matches.

2.Brand- A well known association , which enables a product to be of greater importance if it is associated with a popular brand. This is significant as womens football is strongly dependant upon being associated with leading sports brands to increase popularity. Such brands include Nike, Puma, Addidas e.t.c.

3. Dominant Ideology- A belief in which is dominant amongst the majority of people in a society and is generally accepted. This is significant as dominant ideologies strongly exist within womens football. e.g. many believe that a patriarchal ideology prevents it from progressing as quick as mens football.

4.Family Values- These are traditional views e.g. nuclear families , housewives, often primarily assoiciated with traditional conservatives. This is of importance as it exemplifies how traditional politicians and older members of society view women playing fotball.

5. Hegemony- Cultural, economic and political dominance by the ruling elite in society, this is often argued to be men. This is of significance as many argue that this dominance of men within society is preventing women from progressing in sports.

6. Liberal Feminism- Feminist view that is concerned with promoting equal opportunities, and see's gender inequalities as the cause for a patriarchal society. Significant as this group would greatly support the progression of womens football.

7. Mainstream- Uncontreversial generally accepted views of the majority of society. Import as the mainstream view is that mens football is of greater skill level then womens football and is generally better played.

8.Patriarchy- The ideology that society is dominated by men. This is significant as the main limelight in football always goes to men not women. Hence some argues this exemplifies a patriarchal ideology dominates within womens football.

9. Radical Feminism- This group views men as enemies preventing women from gaining their rights and progressing. This is off importance as this group would greatly fight for and would higly glorify women playing football.

10. Sexism- This is discrimination on the basis of gender. Many argue that this is usually targeted towards women. This is of great importance as many argue that womens football is viewed at with a sexist view ( It is not as good because men arent playing it).

Record Number of TV Viewers Watch Women's World Cup

In Germany, viewership for the opening game in Shanghai (Sep. 10, Germany 11-0 over Argentina) equaled what would be expected for a major European Champions League men's match (about 20 percent market share, or 2.2 million viewers). Japan (20 percent) and Sweden (57 percent) also posted very high market share numbers.

Women's premier Soccer League ( W.P.S.L)

This is the worlds leading most recognised women's football professional league. It is split into 7 conferences according to places where each team is situated in the country and all these teams compete on a professional level. These conferences are entitled the West conference, Southwest Conference,South Conference,Midwest conference,East conference , North division and the Mid atlantic division. All the teams from each conference are split into a division and compete amongst one another. The WPSL'S intentions are to promote women's football worldwide not merely just in the USA. Women's football is progressing immensely due to its influence.

Social Views on women playing football

Many argue that women and men playing together in a match, is a step too far as women are unable to physically compete with men, however many believe that women should be able to compete against one another at the same level that men do. However some just believe that women’s football is not at the same skill level as men’s football and don’t see women deserving enough to make it an occupation

Political Views on Womens football

Politically despite there appearing to be support for women to play football this isn't actually the case. There is a ban restricting women from playing football professionally as an occupation in the UK implemented by the F.A. Dr jean Williams from the De monfort university, argues that this is against the law of equal oppurtunities in the UK. She is urging for this ban to be reviewed aswell as the law for equal opportunity.

Historical – Women's football in UK( the 1921 F.A. Ban)

The idea of women playing football was not revived in the UK until after the first world war.Despite being more popular than some men's football events (one match saw a 53,000 strong crowd), women's football in England and Scotland suffered a blow in 1921 .The F.A. banned women from playing on the same football grounds as men due to distasteful comments. A similar decree was made by Scottish football authorities. Some speculated that these decisions may have been driven by envy of the large crowds that women's matches attracted. The ban led to the formation of the English Ladies Football Association, and women's football matches were moved to Rugby grounds and park football pitches not affiliated to the FA. The ban limited public exposure for women's football and slowed its growth, but did not stop it. Women's football continued to draw some dedicated players and fans but arguably this did greatly hinder the process.

.Despite this occurring such a long time ago it is obvious that has created a huge drift between both genders playing football. Had this ban not occurred women's football could have possibly progressed just as well as men's football in the UK and abroad. Had the ban not occurred today's society may have found that women playing football is just as acceptable and as well played as men playing football.

Economical Factors influencing the restriction on womens football progressing

It is clear that a differentiation is being created between women's and men's football matches as the cost for a women's world cup game this year is merely priced at £5 a game for adults and £2 a game for children. Where as the minimum price you'd find for a men's world cup game would be £40 for adults at the very lowest. This obviously shows how economically why it is difficult for women's football to progress. This also links and easily shows the predominant social view, that people believe women are just not as good as men at sports.

Bend it like beckhams influence on womens football

" David really thought the football scenes were great " – Gurinder Chada- Director

It is clear and evident that this film alone played a key role in the progression of women's football in the UK. Reason being David Beckhams happiness due to the production of the film bearing his name. He stated how he enjoyed the football scenes and was happy to see women's football being glamorized. This is likely to play a key role in promoting women's football as one of the worlds most iconic sports figures is in support of the movement and believes it should be pushed forward. The other key fact is the key role the F.A. played in promoting the film , which enabled it to be so popular not only in Britain but worldwide.

Women's football in the UK

According to BBC Sport-Football has now replaced netball as the most popular sport for females across England. In 1993, when the F.A. took over running women's games in England, there were merely 11,200 players. Today there are over 100,000. However the U.S.A. is clearly the most progressing country with 7.8. million registered players, despite football originating in England. Despite clearly being under represented in the UK, women's football is progressing.Record attendances, TV Ratings , media coverage, increase in financial expenditure and a clear increase in talent all prove this. This particularly occurred after England's success in EURO 2005, reaching the quarter finals, narrowly loosing to Sweden.

An example of Womens football- Germany Reigning World Champions

Fifa’s view on Women's football

Fifa believe that women's football enjoying a boom worldwide and has shown an increase in participation, support and popularity in recent years.
Germany the women's reigning world champions in particular have enjoyed an increase in popularity, with 860,000 of its 6.2million German Football Association members (DFB) being female.

China world cup 2007- China vs Denmark-09/12/2007

This match i thought from the China world cup 2007 highlighted, some of the excellence of womens football.

A game for Rough girls: A history of women's football in Britain-Jean Williams

Jean Williams provides a clear insight into the history of women's football in the UK aswell as shows an insight into the stereotype of women who play football being of manly nature or having masculine characteristics. She provides an in depth view of the problems women face and have faced whilst trying to play football.

Soccer Women and Sexual Liberation- Fan Hong and J.A. Mangan

This book exemplifies how women's football is thriving worldwide. It states that the United States, Norway and China all are places where women's football is progressing much better then men's football, despite all places consisting of being hegemonies. Some would argue however that this is merely due to the fact that men's football is not progressing well and is unpopular in these countries, however others would say that this is merely due to women working hard to become good at football and taking more of a keen interest

China world cup 2007

Currently the women's world cup 2007 is being played in China and according to FIFA and Worawi Makudi, the chairman of the committee for women's football and the 2007 world cup, the stereotype of women's matches being of a lower turnout to men's is not always true.At the final of the women's world cup in 1999, 90,000+ people came to watch the game. However FIFA say that they will not merely rest on part success and that they must push the development of women's football all over the globe.

Inside sport- Gabby logan and Sven- Key concept questions

Media Representations

Who is being represented?- Women are being greatly represented in inside sport, as Gabby Logan in the show interviews many football stars that top male interviewers even struggle to get a chance to talk to.

Why is the Subject being represented in this way?

I think Inside Sport has been portrayed in such a way to encourage women to get more and more involved with sports. This hence also gives the impression that women are not being as under represented in sports and the media as often thought.

Media Language and forms

The Mise-en- Scene also emphasises on the importance of Gabby Logan particularly through the way she is seated in the middle of all those present, each time the show is aired. The professional studio setting also emphasises on Gabby Logans striking presence in the show. The close ups to her face and the low angled shots also emphasise upon Gabby Logans importance in the show.

Narrative

Thw show usually opens in a way where Gabby Logan starts of briefly mentioning the key points to be discussed in the show e.g. the weeks key sports occurances, who is going to be interviewed on the show e.t.c.

Genre

The text belongs to the sports genre. The stars of the show are usually clearly glamourised which of course are Gabby Logan and those interviewed on the show. The text does clearly conform to the conventions of normal sports chat shows such as soccer A.M. , football focus e.t.c. The only way it will differentiate itself from Soccer A.M. is that inside sport also contains quite a serious tone whilst sports topics are discussed, Soccer A.M. is a sports show also used to create humour and solely entertain its audience.

Media Institutions

The text's institution is the BBC , which is a public broadcaster. This means the text has to cater to all kinds of audiences and has to inform, educate aswell as entertain. Inside sport hence has to have some appeal to all kinds of people.

Media Values and Ideologies

The major values and Ideologies associated with Inside sport don't particularly include a patriarchal ideology as with Soccer A.M. and Football Focus. The fact that Gabby Logan presents the show and that men are included creates an ideology which promotes equality amongst genders, which many other sports show do not promote.

Media Audiences

. Despite the presenter of the show being female, i think that males are most likely to view the show and be more attracted to it, as females dont take as much of a keen interest in sports as males. However females interested in sports and football are more then likely to predominantly consist of being the secondary audience, as football has risen to be the most popular sport across England with females. The fact that the BBC is the institution makes Inside Sport accessable to everyone.

. As a viewer of the show i can say that the text is something that i find to be educating, informative aswell as entertaining. However this may be partly due to me coming from a background where many family members take a key interest in sports.

Media proposal

Independent study title- A study into how far women are represented in football and the media.

Hypothesis- I Predict that from this study I will evidently discover that there are two very key arguments to be discovered in great depth. One argument would be that females are under represented and some would argue misrepresented in sports and the media. Women are even if playing the same sports as men portrayed to be less heroic to an extent and less glorified. However a counter argument for this I predict I will find, will be that this is due to a more niche audience, watching females playing the same sports as men and also due to people feeling women fundamentally are not as good as men in the same sports.

Key concepts- Linking the key concepts to my study, I think the key point to go into depth into will be the mise en scene. This is primarily to link this point to the representation of both genders. For example in a standard premiership match for women, the stadium capacity would be clearly low compared to a male premiership match. This links to sport and the media containing a high patriarchal ideology, as many would argue. The main institutions to study will be Itv sport, BBC sport, Euro sport and Sky sports, institutions from various films relevant to the same topic and from other media texts such as newspapers in general, as from this I can evidently find out how big a distinction of representation there is for both genders in sports and the media.

Wider context- For wider context I will be able to link the study of representation for men and women in the sports and media to society in general. I will also be able to link back to historical information where I’m sure once going into deeper research I will find that women were not covered in sports at all, and in some cases did not take part at all. I will also be able to study how economical factors influence the representation of both men and women in the same sports, for example how much is invested in female football and in male football. Politically I will also try to study how different views are placed on the representation of males and females in sport and the media. E.g. the traditional conservatives would argue, that women should as a key role take care of their family and for their occupation be housewives.

Theories and Theorists- I hope to include many theories by theorists who talk of what they believe to be both men and women’s gender roles as this is a highly key factor that influences the representation of men and women in the same sports. E.G. a highly key stereotype is that women are simply just not as good as men at sports in general.
Research- For my research for this independent study I will predominantly be focusing on key sports in the UK, to see how much television coverage both genders receive. I will also be looking over the Internet to find relevant information for this topic. To add I will look at books by theorists who talk of the same topic for examples many books are likely to be published by feminists and traditional conservatives regarding the topic in general. Also sports programmes such as soccer AM, football focus and many others will play key role in research for the study. Also films such as Bend it like Beckham will also be a key focus for research and have key relevance to my study.
